Music and textiles. The two art forms are often described in terms of each other: silky smooth, rhythm, pattern, and music has long been associated with quilts, such as this Friendship Quilt from Russia in the early 20th Century (pictured above). These modern-day quilts by Eliza Hardy Jones, a musician and quilt-maker, make those links a reality.

Eliza Hardy Jones travelled through the United States and Northwest Russia to record folk songs performed by women. Back home in the US, the artist translated the music into colour and shape through a notation that she developed whereby pitch became colour and rhythm took a physical form. The resulting quilts, which can be read from top left to bottom right, reveal the impressions of the songs and the women who perform them, as well as the experience of sharing the music.
